Diddy vs. Kanye.
Before I even show you the photo, understand this: the answer is Diddy. Always and forever.
Whenever people mention their ‘personal brand’ I always sense a slight aftertaste of recusal in the air. There is always a bit of detachment between that person and what is supposed to be an avatar of their taste, character, and personality. And I don’t know what’s worse, that distance between the person and their ‘brand’, or the fact that so many people buy into this shit.
This past weekend, I was in Toronto for an academic conference. My comrades and I decided to walk to Chinatown/Kensington for dinner. Somehow, we ended up in Little Italy.
I’d like to preface this tale by saying that Bent was our second choice. It wasn’t even a choice, really. After walking for almost an hour, getting irately hungry and turned down by Patois, an asian-caribbean restaurant that we trooped on foot to experience (it was a two hour wait), Bent with its clean, modern exterior and outside seating looked very attractive:
In his latest piece for The Atlantic, Ta-Nehisi Coates writes, “When nonviolence is preached by the representatives of the state, while the state doles out heaps of violence to its citizens, it reveals itself to be a con. And none of this can mean that rioting or violence is “correct” or “wise,” any more than a forest fire can be “correct” or “wise.” Wisdom isn’t the point tonight. Disrespect is. In this case, disrespect for the hollow law and failed order that so regularly disrespects the rioters themselves”.
ALL OF THIS.
Transgender has been in the spotlight lately, and it’s really been an amazing turn of events. I pompously like to think that I stay away from celebrity culture, but there is this burgeoning consciousness about trans issues that has really been spearheaded by pop culture and its celebrities to which I am thankful. And, I’ve really been challenged. I subscribe to the idea that gender is socially constructed, but now, I’ve been confronted by what that means in reality. (more…)
Here is a brief Twitter roll call of activists, journalists and organizations who are providing helpful and meaningful coverage of the Freddie Gray protests. They are either there participating and witnessing, or sharing the articles, tweets and photos of those who are. Please add anyone to this list you feel is missing.

So, I was cleaning a bit, and cleaning is the worst. In order to pass the horrible horrible minutes of cleaning, of course music was essential. I was feeling a change of pace and having just binge watched Transparent (soooo good though side bar I’m an idiot and it took me a shamefully long time to get the title, SHAMEFUL, like second day in of watching it, and even after my dude was all that’s a great title trans-parent, and I’m all duh it’s great, still not getting it! Face palm) and I was feeling in the mood for some of the great 70s music they had on the show. They have this bit where the younger brother and sister are looking at some records and they’re checking out this Jim Croce album.
There are so many Batman movies that a breakdown of my feelings was necessary before I could even entertain the idea of Ben Affleck as the iconic Bat. Two apologies right off the bat (OMG I cannot stop saying bat and will continue to do so), I don’t talk about the Adam West TV show or the comics because I haven’t really watched nor read them. And the cartoon was seriously boss, but that’s all I have to say about it because I was like ten when I watched it, and the memory isn’t so good anymore due to old age and poor life decisions.
So here goes 😀
